Bandon Monday Painting Group will be taking a break until Monday, January 7, 2013.  Enjoy the busy-ness of this time of year.  Keep on painting .

 

Remember to get your tree paintings ready for the January show at Southern Coos Hospital.  Drop-off date for that show is 9:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 9, 2013.  Trees by Plein Air Painters will be part of the show, along with tree related art from you and other on the southern Oregon coast artists.

Art Reception for a show celebrating the work of Bandon sculptor Charles Tatum.  His work envisioned in photographs by David Czuba will be displayed on the wall gallery.  Tatum’s works from the collection of Patricia Soltys, and pieces later cast in glass by Dutch Schulze, and will be displayed in the cases.  Show runs through December.

******Yuji Hiratsuka, Clint Brown and Douglas Russell will open their studios to students, faculty, and the public from 11:00-3:00 on Saturday, December 1st. Yuji Hiratsuka is printmaking professor of art at Oregon State University, Clint Brown is emeritus OSU Art Faculty in painting and drawing, and Douglas Russell is the curator and director for Fairbanks Gallery.   Yuji Both Yuji Hiratsuka and Clint Brown are fabulous artists and have illustrious records in their fields. Doug Russell has just finished exhibiting his paintings at the Coos Art Museum . This should be a really nice opportunity to meet with them, see their artwork, and talk to them about their work in prints, paintings and drawings.

Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my!

Dear Coos Art Museum Supporters,


Arriving soon “Ken Means’ Carousel” Exhibition. Some of the animals arrived on Tuesday and the rest will be coming to the museum on Thursday and Friday.

The exhibition opens on Friday, December 7th, with an opening reception from 5 – 7pm. Bring your children and grandchildren, take lots of pictures and have fun at the Coos Art Museum.

Coos Art Museum will be open longer hours on Saturdays from December 8th thru January 26th, to make sure that are plenty of times to bring the family.

Children must be accompanied by an adult and admission is free for children.

Admission is:

Adults: $5.00

Seniors: $2.00

Veterans: $2.00

Coos Art Museum Membership Drive

Dear Coos Art Museum Supporters,

This is just a quick note to update everyone on how our 2013 Annual Membership drive is going so far.

As of today’s date, November 28, 2012, we have 136 members signed up and 24 of those are new this year or are returning members. We are very close to reaching our $10,000 goal for members in November.

We are hoping to do the same for December, surpassing our $18,000 total for last years advanced membership drive.
It is because of members like you, that we are able to continue offering a variety of exhibitions, classes and events.
Please keep in mind, that at least for this year, your membership and donations are tax deductible and that any donations may qualify you for the “Oregon Cultural Trust”, tax credit program.

We really appreciate each and everyone of members past, present and future.

And don’t forget to come see the Ken Means’ Carousel Show, opening December 7th , 5pm to 7pm. The Show runs

December 7th through January 26th.

The days dwindle down to a precious few

Yes, they do and if you are planning on getting anything ready before you run out of year, now is the time.

I know I’ve harped and harped about getting calendars made up for your clients and vendors so that when you send out your Christmas cards you can slip one in like a good marketer, but have I mentioned wall calendars?

No, probably not, not since this time last year when I cried out in vain for you to make up your own calendars and you did not. Sure I know what it is like this time of the year, you have too much to do, for too many people and too little time and too many demands on your time and then there’s the usual stuff, getting the house decorated and the packages wrapped. (Yeah, you let the other guys do it that one year and people thought you’d wadded up the wrapping paper and missed the trash can so you won’t do that again.) You could really use some super powers about now.

But even with all of that stuff to do you have to think about what you are going to do for yourself.

Remember, yesterday I urged you to say, “Gift card”, when someone asks The Question? This is one of the times when it can sure come in handy. Instead of slipping cash out of the household account or nicking a coin or two from the old hound’s Powerball money, you have that nifty, neat and cool gift card and can just go down to Staples and order your calendars and no one can say squat.

Now there are there places where you can get this job done and I have no stock in nor love for Staples, but it is local, fast and relatively cheap.

Right now you can do a photo calendar with twelve unique images for just $15.99. That’s right less than the cost of four Starbucks for the office guys and you have something which can last the whole year.

Now tell me you can’t afford that.

And yes, I know I advocate doing this yourself and I still think that is the best way to do it, but there are people, artist type people who think anything less than the best just isn’t best enough. Now it is true that you’ll have this hanging around all year so you do want it to look like you actually wanted people to see it and you thought enough of the work to get the best printing possible done and you wanted it to hold up for the whole twelve months so you got it bound professionally and that’s the truth.

Sure, you can do all of this yourself with a comb binder and a good inkjet printer but there is the time element. Maybe getting someone else to do all of the hard work is the right idea. That way you will have time to re-wrap all of the presents the ole Couch slug and the kids do and you won’t have to claim that you were hit by a rabid UPS truck on the way to the Christmas party or Uncle Bubba’s and you’ll be able to show your face at all of the family gatherings between now and the end of graduation season.

You don’t have twelve images to use?

Why not? Haven’t you been doing what I told you? You take pictures of everything you paint, sculpt, weave, or bake and you keep them in a file so that you can drag them out for just such an occasion.

There are so many advertising calendars going out right now, full of plumbing parts and half-nekkid girls draped over auto parts and kittens, kittens, kittens doing the silliest things and shouldn’t you be trying to lift the bar a bit by using really good art?

You know Klee and Picasso and even Andy Warhol all have calendars and while I am sure that part of it is the merchandisers can print the images cause most of these guys are dead and can’t scream about copyright violations, part of it is people like to have something on their wall that they don’t have to cover up when the pastor comes by for coffee or when those nice folks knock at your door to let you in on the special secret that there are only so many spots open in heaven and maybe you’d like to get in on the inside track and you don’t really want them to see a Victoria’s Secret calendar, cause you know how easily they can be frightened and then there’s the relatives who think that you spend all of your time reading good books and watching PBS and they shouldn’t be disillusioned, so why not have a calendar full of your own art so that even if you do have images of nekkid girls who actually look like girls and not like ten year old boys in lacy underwear like the models in Victoria’s not so Secrets?

Here’s a better deal, right now you can do two for the price of one, get two calendars for the price of one $15.99 payment and no shipping charge. That’s a Cyber Monday deal if I ever saw one.

So don’t waste anymore time, the shows don’t start until eight tonight so you can get on right now and place your order and the when you see how good they look you’ll want more and even if you don’t when you give that second calendar to your long lost second cousin by your married older half sister from Duluth, so that you can cover up the fact that you didn’t know they were coming and have absolutely nothing to give them you can get off the hook and feel really, really good about yourself cause you gave them art.

Impersonally Personal

Black Friday has come and gone and with all of the food preparation, housecleaning and family management, you are ready for two weeks paid vacation.

We’ll say that the thing on the sofa got up and helped you with the kitchen, the kids drove themselves to the store, (You don’t want to know what they were doing and buying, not really) and you arranged for all of the family to come and go without a single injury requiring a visit to the emergency room. You should be handling the Middle East problem!

Now the reality hits you, you stop, take a breath for the first time in two weeks and realize that all of those Christmas shows on Cable aren’t a programming mistake; it is less than a month until Christmas.

Now you have to grid up your loins, (I never really understood what girding was and why lions should be girded but that what they say you should do so let’s just play along and save some time for the hard part, the shopping.)and head out to face the music at Wally World.

Sure you are going to give art to the majority of your adult fiends, the ones who can understand and appreciate what real personal insight is all about, but what are you going to do about the people on your Christmas list who aren’t adults? You know, the kids, the guys, (Most guys don’t really grow up until around twenty-three and some of them have been known to stay twenty-three for five or ten years.), the ones who never made it to the maturing part of the course.

You’ll do what all panicked, last-minute shoppers have done for the last several years, since some creative genius came up with gift cards, you’ll buy gift cards. Yes, I know Suze Ormond says don’t do it and Clark Howard says don’t do it and probably even Elmo says don’t do it, but there comes a time to turn mother’s face to the wall, suck it up and admit that you just don’t have any more time.

Don’t you feel better now that that decision is made?

Of course there’s still one important issue to face, what do you say when everyone form your spouse to the mailman says, “What do you want for Christmas?”

The answer, crass as it is is the same, gift cards. I know as warm and fuzzy was socks and nearly as romantic as a root canal. But let’s face it, does anyone besides you actually know what you want and do you actually know most of the time?

No you don’t. It’s a hard thing to admit, but there it is, most of us haven’t a clue what we want or when we want it, we only know after we’ve seen someone else get it and think, “Now why didn’t I ask for that?”

And then there’s the understanding gap. As an artist you may just want something which a regular Joe hasn’t got a clue about and wouldn’t know where to look for it if they did and doesn’t understand what it is even after you have explained it to them.

Or, maybe it is something that any ole duck could understand but it was new five years ago and now there isn’t one anywhere in the world, except, Ebay. Okay, Craig’s List too but to get it you have to be able to pay for it online and they won’t take that ten gallon jar of pennies that you have been hoarding for just such an occasion.

So what do you do? (You know you don’t have to be forced into a box by wanting a unique or obsolete thingy, maybe you just want something that Amazon has and no one in Coos County does, but to get it you have to use a credit card and that is pretty scary these days with all of the cyber crime and identity theft. So…) You get a gift card.

Now Amazon makes that a pretty easy thing and you can get one for yourself, for your great aunt Mahatmja, or you can say, when the dreaded question is asked, “What do you want for Christmas?”

But maybe your goodie lives on eBay. Then you won’t be able to get it with an Amazon gift card. Try a prepaid Visa or Master Card. Sure they can be expensive and might be a rip-off and could eat up all of your money in fees, but that is why you buy the card at your bank.

Yes, they do and they’ll be happy to do it for you and they’ll charge you a whole bunch less than the ones you can get at Safeway or Freddie’s or Wally World. They’ll let you personalize them and give you gift envelopes and they’ll make it as easy as can be cause they’ll get to gouge the merchant when you use it.

And you will be able to get what you actually want instead of the lacy thing from Victoria’s Secrets which you’d get arrested if you ever wore it outside of the house not to mention putting the kids into shock if they saw it and you don’t even want to know what would happen if your adult children saw it cause all of them were born through immaculate conception and let’s not even think about what would happen if that ole thing on the couch opened the wrong package and got a good look and suffered a massive coronary.

So this year do the right thing and when you get asked The Question, say with a smile, “A gift card would be nice.”
