The art and craft of drawing.
That’s like saying beauty is what is beautiful.
What is draftsmanship and why should an artist care?
Draftsmanship is the underpinning of any composition; it is the structure behind the paint, the graphite, the clay. The Old Masters knew it, they spent years as apprentices, mixing their master’s paint, copying the art of earlier masters, learning the secrets and subtleties of shade and light. And boy does it show. Even the modern masters, who deconstructed the image and sought new ways of seeing, knew their draftsmanship. The light and color of Lautrec, the fractured grotesques of Klee and Picasso, the Pointillists and Cubists all of them could draft.
What’s the difference? I’m an abstract artist, more interested in form and color. The difference is that people have trouble seeing something they cannot identify. If they can’t find the form inside the image they just can’t see it.
So, there’s no image just colors and shapes. The thing has no form, it’s abstract.
Even the most wildly abstract images have form. Mondrian used hard geometrics as the basis of his images, Jackson Pollock’s splatter patterns have strong groupings of lines and colors, they have form.
And just in case your image does have some underlying form it has to be right. If the form is wrong then the piece fails. The most terrifying image an artist can make is a bad nude. It’s immediately apparent. The trouble is we all have seen a nude. (If only in the fogged bathroom mirror as we run from the shower to the dresser to get our drawers.) We know when it isn’t right.
Now add to that some bit of artistic license and you have an eye-catcher alright, but not the way you’d hoped. People will spend hours starring at your work, but not to understand the meaning, they want to know what the heck you covered up!
Building, motor vehicles, sports and even relaxed senics or Norman Rockwell vignettes, all have to be under-pinned by draftsmanship.
So the next time you skip the sketch and go straight to the color pots think before you splash, spatter, stroke, is it right? The eye knows.

Too Many Options
It’s overwhelming isn’t it, the variety and number of juried events available to the South Coast artist right now is staggering.
What to do? Do your rush an entry or carefully sort through the prospectus to see if you have anything that qualifies.
You don’t need to. You don’t have anything.
What? You’re an artist and the time is now. Oh sure you’ve all ready missed the CAM Biennial, but what about the Fish/Fishing show coming up, the deadline is October 9, you still have time. And then there’s Celebrate the Arts in Florence. Their deadline is October 15. Also October 15, Art 101 hosts the juried show Masks From Found Objects, there are shows everywhere.
And don’t forget even if you haven’t entered a piece you should get out and support the artists who have. The reception for the CAM Biennial is Friday October 1 and a week later The Southern Coos Hospital opens The Artist and Writer’s Exchange; Food for Thought, Sunday October 10. And what about the artists in the CAM Biennial who are counting for you to get out and vote for their work so that they can get a private show? Are you going to let them down?

You have to get ahead of the silly things. You have to take all of those pieces you crafted for a bygone show and keep them ready to jump into the fray. And remember most shows are time sensitive, they limit the range a piece can be created in, three years often, so if you hoard your work it may drop out of contention by becoming too old. Find it, dust it off and be ready.
We have more shows right now than anyone could wish for and if you have kept your stock up to date then you do have something. And even if you don’t you can support those who do.

starting in Oct 5 . I have a Painting there for over a year,
and Steve will return it to me at any time.
(The paintings are basically on loan.)

Karen C kept track of all of the comings and goings...
Stephen made all of the obligatory speeches...
There was serious talk...
Happy talk...
The Glitterati...
and volunteers...
a celebrity artist or two...
a celebrity dignitary who wouldn't claim it for the world...
and plenty of smiles for one and all.
Now aren't you sorry you stayed home to watch Medium and missed out on all of the fun. But don't mope, there's still a chance for you to have your very own piece of the fun. I know Stephen and Archi would love to receive a donation or a gift or a land grant or a mention in a will, so don't drag your feet, if you missed out on all of the fun get thee to the Coos Art Museum and give and give and give. Then you can go to the reception of the CAM Biennial with a clear conscious and only feel bad that you didn't get your own piece ready for the show. (Oh good grief, there's another one coming, just download the forms and get the picture framed, the Fish/Fishing show deadline in October the ninth. You don't want to have to say that you let the Big One get away, right?)

Painters who have art at Bandon Library show--we will take down the show Thursday, September 30th. If you are unable to get your painting that day, I will pick them up and have them for you at Bandon Artist Supply to pick up later.

Second Street Gallery is pleased to announce that Dolores Egger, a prominent Nortwest national artist from the Portland area, will conduct a workshop entitled Seascape Workshop In Oils, Saturday October 9th, from 9AM until 4PM. The workshop is designed for beginner to intermediate level artists.
Egger has authored 4 instructional books, "Expressions In Oils", and has taught oil painting for over 30 years. She attended Miller Smith of Pasadena School of Fine Arts. Her work was awarded first place in the National Art Exhibit American Mothers of Oregon and was runner up in the National Art Exhibit in New York City.

Second Street Gallery is pleased to announce that Dolores Egger, a prominent Nortwest national artist from the Portland area, will conduct a workshop entitled Seascape Workshop In Oils, Saturday October 9th, from 9AM until 4PM. The workshop is designed for beginner to intermediate level artists.
Egger has authored 4 instructional books, "Expressions In Oils", and has taught oil painting for over 30 years. She attended Miller Smith of Pasadena School of Fine Arts. Her work was awarded first place in the National Art Exhibit American Mothers of Oregon and was runner up in the National Art Exhibit in New York City.

Every year for 50 years the L.A. Municipal Gallery has held its "Open Call" exhibit where any artist can show up with their art and an entry fee (to benefit gallery programs) and the piece is shown. The Los Angeles Center For Digital Art decided to launch an international experiment of the same nature where the artists upload images that are printed and hung by the gallery. The hundreds of works are displayed in a grid like installation (reminiscent of postcard art shows of the 1980's) where every work submitted is exhibited.
The usual (less than democratic) selection process where only the precious few are chosen is turned on its head in a curatorial anarchy where everyone gets to participate and the viewer is literally left to be the judge. The show represents a snapshot of a current moment in art history when digital imaging has reached the hands of the many, an age where culture belongs to the "mobblogers" around the globe. From Thailand to Texas, amateur to academic, beautiful to banal and beyond the monumental quantity and variety of "Snap to Grid" becomes an aesthetic experience where each individual piece adds to an agglomerate effect that has a life of its own.

Next To The Last Chance
If you traditionally wait until the last moment to do your Christmas shopping, Santa is in the chimney. That’s right, if you planned to enter the CAM Biennial your time is up. Today, tomorrow and Wednesday are the last days for entries in the show.
This is a chance to see your art hanging in a real, live art museum. How can you pass that up? And for all of the “REAL” artists out there turning your, oh so patrician noses in the air, if you want the quality of the art in this show to be commonplace sit on your hands. This is a show where anyone can enter; there is no jury except for the participants.
That’s right, there are no blue-noses sniffing and snorting at what constitutes ART, just the folks who enter and if you do REAL art and don’t enter because you don’t want to end up hanging on a wall with some amateur then the quality of the show will suffer and who’s fault is that?
So, get your frames together and go to the Coos Art Museum before it is too late. Pay the entry fee, if you enter three pictures it’s only $35.00, and take your best shot. You’ll get to see your work in a museum and if the public likes it enough you get…a private showing at a future date. If that doesn’t make your juices flow maybe you’re a quart or two low? Com-on, your own show, a chance to get all of those pieces juries rejected, wrongly, hung and vindicated, that’s neater than sliced bread.
Don’t wake up on Thursday and find that the moment has passed you by, the CAM Biennial comes only once every two years, (which is why its called a biennial), and that’s a long time to wait to make up for your tardiness. So don’t be a fool, stay in the really big sheeeeeeew! Okay so maybe most of that phrase has been used before, but it’s true, the show is here, the time is now and if you don’t play ya can’t win.

We will be painting plein air this coming Monday, September 20th at Old Bandon Golf Links. We will meet at the Clubhouse at noon for lunch, then paint 1-4 p.m. This is an old style links course with sheep on the range. :) Should be fun.
Take Beach Loop Drive to the Best Western Inn at Face Rock, turn into the entrance and follow the road to behind the motel. The Clubhouse sits on a knoll back there.

If you are frustrated at how long an art project takes to complete, check out this French installation artist's website. This particular project is one that he started working on in 1992 and, if he gets his permitting, it will show for 14 days in 2012.
Whether you agree, or not, with the idea of stringing large amounts of cloth on cables over the Arkansas River in southern Colorado---you have to admire the fortitude of the artist and the magnitude of his projects. Interesting mockup paintings of how it should look when completed are posted on the website below. One of our local artists had the opportunity to work on one of this artists large scale projects in the past.

Autumn at Easy Lane Frames & Select Art Gallery by Jane Snoddy
We all know that these can be discouraging times, but if we all pull together and support one another we can make the most of it. We are hoping that each artist will take the time to personally invite their friends and neighbors to attend art openings, special shows and classes offered. Many people respond when they receive that personal invitation. One of the first things that you can invite others to attend is ArtWalk on the second Thursday of each month. Without the help of the media it is difficult to get the word out. ArtWalk is a pleasant evening with refreshments, guest artists to meet and just time to leisurely stroll through the galleries and other venues open for this event. All the businesses need your support, even if you are just looking and finding inspiration. I know that the 50 local artists that we represent would appreciate your support and encouragement.
Our new show, entitled “Who Am I?”, features the work of emerging artist Kenneth “Jaymi” Pembroke. Jaymi was born in San Bernardino, CA and raised in this area through middle school. His first art show was in the fifth grade when his work was displayed outside his classroom. I had the pleasure of having him as an art student at North Bend Jr. High. He was interested in every facet of art and loved a challenge. Jaymi returned to California where he studied art in high school and continued to earn certificates in visual merchandising and fashion design. He participated in designing and creating two distinct lines, one for women and one for men, for a student fashion show. Jaymi returned to our area and I’ve had the pleasure of having him in watercolor class for the last three years. His work has grown in leaps and bounds. His specialty has been the female form and impressionistic work. He likes to take cartoon and comic book characters and create fresh, new portraits. Come to see some of his latest works from the ‘80’s pop culture cartoon series. Jaymi will have prints and cards available in the gallery. Here is your chance to meet and encourage an exciting new artist during ArtWalk on October 14th from 5:00-8:00 PM.

There will be made-to-order sandwiches at the snack bar this year, along with salads, our fabulous cookies, and hot coffee, tea, and chilled cans of soda.

Outreach
I had the great good fortune to spend some time Monday with the Plein Air group working at the Charleston Boatyard. The Boatyard is a wonderful place to work and if you haven't you should check it out, but be a responsible artist, contact the yard manager and ask. This is a working yard where many large things go buzzing about and they aren't looking for painters. Maybe you should ask Ava to arrange another day for the group so that you can join them.
The Plein Air group works outside in the tradition of the Impressionists. This presents the painter with a number of challenges, keeping the lint, bugs and flying firth out of the paint, staying warm enough to hold a brush and dealing with the shifting winds and people, machines and shadows which insist on blocking your view.
And then you get to paint.
Some of us find working in our studios with no distractions and threats of immediate death to any who dare to enter the Holy of Holies hard enough, just imagine packing up all of your tools and going out of doors. I'd be lucky to remeber to take the lens cap off. (Yes, the Plein Air group is a tolerant bunch, they even allow photographers to join in their fun and they don't whisper behind the photographers back. [At least until after they get their fill and leave.])
So thanks Monday Plein Air group. I hope I was a good guest and that you'll have me back sometime and here are a few of the images I managed to capture.

Monday Plein Air Comes to Charleytown
The Bandon plein air group invaded the Charleston shipyard Monday and the faded ships and idle machines seem to glow with a new magic.
Ava was there to make sure everyone was okay and out of harm's way...
Some sat it out,
While others went straight to their work...
Some used an easel,
while some got up close and personal.
some worked quietly...
and some put their heads together...
some just worked by themselves...
some got a hand form the local art critic...
and some went off in search of inspiration.
some waited for a sign,
and the Sage just smiled.

Trouble in River City
Yesterday, while I should have been wadding around in a bog, taking pictures and feeling like Frank Buck, I was fighting a bug, a dirty, nasty, despicable computer bug. No, I did not get it from going to one of those sites. In fact I didn’t get it at all, but I knew about it almost the second it happened, the long suffering wife emitted a stream of most unladylike words and a scream and by the time I made it in from where I was, up to my elbows in cat litter, (Hey, you have to dredge the boxes if you expect to live without the neighbors saying things about the “crazy” cat people.), the nasty was busily send out pop-ups telling the Spouse how her computer was infected.
Now it wasn’t and those pop-ups if activated will take your information and give it to identity thieves and pornographers and used car salesmen. So I washed off the cat litter and began a four hour fight to disinfect her computer.
In the end all was well, the bug gone and the computer restored to its well behaved, pop-up free self, but it was a battle.
Now I know this is a blog about art and I won’t go into all of the Dixie-whistling I did to restore the machine, but I will say one thing, Malwarebytes.
Malwarebytes is a free, that’s right, free program which anyone can download and run and will, if updated regularly beat the tar out of any bug you might innocently pick up.

Sure there’s always a version which you can pay for and the producer surely wants you to do so, but the free version will do all, but the most dastardly bugs to death.
If you use the Net, you should download and learn to use this product. It will keep your machine out of the shop, save you mucho dollars in repair bills, (The shop will just download and install Malwarebytes and run it until the infection is gone so why should you wait and pay them to do it?), and keep you up and running so that you can be creating more art.

Fame, Fortune and Fowl
Birdwoman of Coos County, Kelle Herrick has brought more fame and fortune, okay, so fame and a coupla bucks, to her collection of awards and honors, she has been selected as the Salem Audubon Society’s 2010 Photo Contest Grand Prize winner. And no wonder, when you see the work she offered for this contest you will weep, (sell your camera, join the French Foreign legion, etc, etc…) And so without further ado, brouhaha or clap-trap, here is the big winner.
Now I personally wouldn’t get up at three in the am, slog through the marshes, and carry a hundred and fifty pounds of equipment like a surfer Sherpa, but when you do pictures like this happen. Damn! The girl is goooooooood. Could you see if maybe some of those fowl would take a ten o’clock brunch meeting?

We will be painting at Giddings Boatworks, 63106 Troller Rd, in Charleston on Monday, September 13th, from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Turn south on the road at the east end of the drawbridge (by Charleytown) and go to the end of the road.
Pick a spot where you would like to paint. Stay out of the way of the working folks and park out of the way please. There is a restroom on site.
We will meet at the Sea Basket Restaurant (6350 Kingfisher Rd) by the Charleston Boat Basin at 12 Noon for lunch if you would like to eat before painting.
If you would like to carpool or caravan from Bandon, please meet me at the north end of the Ray's Foods parking lot (close to Bree's) on Monday at 11:15 a.m.

Coos Art Museum is having their annual fall fundraiser "Fall Fling". Help support our regional art museum by donating a painting for their auction. You can also send another painting for sale and get 50% of the sales price back (if it sells), and you set the minimum bid price. You get the painting back if it doesn't sell.
To make it easier to donate, you can drop off your paintings at Bandon Artist Supply (541-347-4482) between now and next Tuesday, September 14th at 3 p.m. That's when Pat Snyder will come from Coos Bay to pick them up and take them to the Coos Art Museum for us. He volunteers at the museum and is helping facilitate the process.

Coos Art Museum is having their annual fall fundraiser "Fall Fling". Help support our regional art museum by donating a painting for their auction. You can also send another painting for sale and get 50% of the sales price back (if it sells), and you set the minimum bid price. You get the painting back if it doesn't sell.
To make it easier to donate, you can drop off your paintings at Bandon Artist Supply (541-347-4482) between now and next Tuesday, September 14th at 3 p.m. That's when Pat Snyder will come from Coos Bay to pick them up and take them to the Coos Art Museum for us. He volunteers at the museum and is helping facilitate the process.
There will be donation forms at Bandon Artist Supply also. Thank you! Bring a bio too, if you want one displayed at CAM.

GUIDELINES
Eligibility
Open to all artists—painters, sculptors, photographers and printmakers—over 18 years of age. Artists are invited to submit up to three original works of art on any theme related to fish, sport fishing or the fishing industry. Works selected by jurors from submitted entries will be chosen on the basis of creative excellence and quality of execution. All works must be original and completed within the last two years. Coos Art Museum’s “Fish and Fishing Art” jurors will be the final authority on eligibility. Accepted works meant for wall hanging must be ready with all necessary hardware in place.
General Rules Artists may submit up to three (3) entries, with a non-refundable fee of $15 for the first entry and $10 each for the second and third submissions. These entries must have been created within the last 2 years (2009-2010) with an unframed size limitation of four (4) feet by eight (8) feet and a weight limitation of 50 pounds.
ELIGIBLE ART MEDIUMS: Allowed with the following criteria
Paintings – limitation of 48 inches in any direction – this includes the frame.
Drawings – limitation of 48 inches in any direction – this includes the frame.
Hand pulled prints, etchings, serigraphs – limitation of 48 inches in any direction – this includes the frame.
Photography (film or digital) - limitation of 48 inches in any direction – this includes the frame.
Mixed media – limitation of 48 inches in any direction – this includes the frame.
Fiber & textiles – wall hangings – limitation of 48 inches in any direction – this includes the frame
Fiber & textiles – wearable – must supply display device
Small sculptures – weight limitation of 50 lbs and 48″ in any direction

Include with your entry a self-addressed, 6×9 stamped envelope (SASE) for submissions CD and slide return and acceptance letters with shipping information. Winning an Award
The winning First Place will receive a cash prize of $500.
The winning Second Place will receive a cash prize of $350.
The winning Third Place Award will receive a cash prize of $250.
4 Honorable Mention ribbons will also be awarded.
Sales
The Museum will make resumes of artists whose works are accepted available to visitors during the exhibition. Works may be available for sale. Artist agrees to donate 30% of any sale to Coos Art Museum. The artist is to be paid three weeks from end of show. Please price your works with this in mind. Your entry confirms all terms of this agreement.
Delivery and Pickup of Art Works
Artists whose work is accepted must have artwork delivered to the museum via carrier service at their own expense for arrival between November 29 and December 03, 2010. Hand delivered work will be received at the museum on Friday, December 03, 2010 between 10 am and 4 pm, Saturday, December 04, 2010 between 1 pm and 4 pm and Sunday, December 05, 2010 between 10 am and noon. Coos Art Museum will not pay for return shipment of artwork. Artists must make pre-paid arrangements to have their work returned to them, or may pick up their work in person at the museum on Saturday, February 19, 2011 from 4-6pm and Sunday February 20, 2011 between 10am and noon.

Two-dimensional works must be wired and ready for hanging and be no more than four (4) feet by eight (8) feet, excluding the frame. If done on a gallery-wrapped canvas, the art must encompass the sides of the canvas. Non-hanging pieces must be no larger than eight (8) feet in any direction, no heavier than 50 pounds and ready for display. If special display is required, directions must be included with the piece. All work must be labeled on the back or underside with the artist’s name, address, and phone number. Labels must also show the work’s Title, Medium, Date of Creation, and (retail) value of the piece as set by the artist. Art is insured while in the museum from November 21, 2010 through February 14, 2011.

Juror: Don McMichael
Juror Don McMichael served 20 years in the United States Coast Guard before retiring to pursue a career in art. While in the Coast Guard he developed a deep respect and admiration for the ocean and the underwater world of marine wildlife. Best known for his depictions of whales and other marine mammals Don has exhibited his art throughout the United States and abroad, and has received awards from such notable exhibitions as the Audubon Society and Mystic Seaport during their annual international shows. He is also an artist member of the prestigious American Society of Marine Artists, artist member of the United States Coast Guard Artist’s Group, avid supporter of the Cousteau Society, Center for Whale Studies and numerous other marine conservation organizations.
Juror: Anne Sobbota
Juror Anne Sobbota is the owner/manager of SAGE Gallery in Bandon, Oregon. Founded in 2007 SAGE represents about 85 artists from the West Coast and beyond. Anne is a graduate of California State University in Los Angeles with a BA degree in Art Education and an MA in Art History. She taught photography and television production in Corona, California for ten years and art history at Pasadena Community College and Glendale Community College. In addition to being an avid photographer she is also a specialist in the history of photography.
Juror: Andy Charles
Juror Andy Charles is a resident of North Bend, Oregon and an avid outdoorsman. A largely self-taught artist Andy has been painting and drawing since his boyhood days in Maryland. Before moving to Oregon he served as Artist in Residence at the Carnegie Art Center in Walla Walla, Washington. Occasionally Andy has done commissioned illustrations including a children’s book for the chief diver of the Cousteau Expeditions. He works in a variety of media including prismacolor, watercolor and oil. His works are noted for precise detail and a wide range of subjects including travel, history, surfing, wildlife and fishing scenes.

“Coos Art Museum is the cornerstone of visual arts on Oregon’s Southern Coast. Through collections, exhibitions and educational programs, we are building an arts and cultural community and promoting the appreciation, understanding and expression of visual art.” Located on the scenic southern Oregon Coast Coos Art Museum is the 3rd oldest art museum in Oregon. CAM traces its roots to the Coos Artist League, active since 1950. Members of the League conducted early operations in storefront locations before moving to a Carnegie Library Building. In 1982 Coos Art Museum members, acquired and remodeled the old US Post Office building, a historical art deco structure built in 1937. The Museum has five active galleries totaling almost 5,000 sq feet of display space and a 540 piece Permanent Collection of mid-20th Century and contemporary American art.

35th Anniversary Women Only Photography Call for Entry
International Deadline: September 30, 2010 - To celebrate our 35th anniversary, New York's 'Professional Women Photographers' invites all women photographers - non-members and members, amateur and professional to submit entries. Jurors Elinor Carucci and Stephen Perloff will award $3000 in prizes and the Grand Prize image will appear on the cover of 'Imprints Magazine' Fall/Winter issue.
Photographs will also be exhibited at New York’s Soho Photo gallery from June 1-June 14, 2011.
AWARDS
Winners will be selected from four categories. Submissions may be made to more than one category, but an entry fee will be charged for each category entered. The categories are:

Selected images will be seen by an international audience of collectors, curators, art consultants and others who appreciate fine art photography.
These images, as well as 20 Jurors’ Selections, will be exhibited in a two-week group show at New York’s Soho Photo gallery from June 1 – June 14, 2011 and in on online exhibition on the PWP website for six months, November 15, 2010 – May 15, 2011. An additional 30 images selected for Honorable Mention will also be included in the PWP online Exhibition.
Grand Prize: One photographer will receive $600 and have their image on the cover of IMPRINTS Magazine 2010 Fall/Winter issue. IMPRINTS Magazine, the official publication of PWP, is published in hard copy and online editions. The image will be in the Soho Photo gallery show and the PWP online exhibition.
First Prizes: 4 photographers (one in each category) will receive $300 and their selected image will appear in the Fall/Winter issue of IMPRINTS Magazine. Their image will be in the Soho Photo gallery show and PWP online exhibition.
Second Prizes: 4 photographers (one in each category) will receive $200 and their image will appear in IMPRINTS Fall/Winter issue. Their image will be in the Soho Photo gallery show and PWP online exhibition.
Third Prizes: 4 photographers (one in each category) will receive $100 and their image will appear in the Fall/Winter issue of IMPRINTS. Their image will be exhibited in the Soho Photo gallery show and PWP online exhibition.

ELIGIBILITY
This Call for Entries is open to all women photographers, non-members and members, amateur and professional. PWP invites women photographers working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought to participate. Experimental and mixed techniques are welcome. Only 2-D work is eligible and must be limited in Framed Size to 24 x 30 inches.

Elinor Carucci is an internationally recognized photographer whose photographs are in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Houston Museum of Fine Art. Her work has appeared in such prestigious publications asThe New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Details, New York Magazine, W, Aperture, and Artnews. She has had solo exhibitions at the Edwynn Houk Gallery, Fifty One Fine Art Gallery, James Hyman Gallery and London’s Gagosian Gallery. Group shows include The Museum of Modern Art in New York and The Photographer’s Gallery in London.
In 2002, Chronicle Books published Carucci’s first monograph, Closer, which is now available in a second edition with an introduction by Susan Kismaric, Curator, Department of Photography, MoMA. Her second monograph, Diary of a Dancer was published by SteidlMack in 2005. She currently teaches photography at the graduate program of School of Visual Arts.
Stephen Perloff is the editor of The Photo Review which he founded in 1976, editor of The Photograph Collector, and editor of Focus Magazine. He has taught photography and the history of photography, and was the recipient of the Sol Mednick Award for 2000 for Photographic Education and the first annual Vanguard Award from the Philadelphia Center for the Photographic Image in 2007.
He has curated more than 20 exhibitions, including the Woodmere Art Museum Photography Triennial in 2009/2010. His photographs have appeared in numerous exhibitions and reside in many museum and private collections.
ENTRY FEE
The entry fee is $35 for the first three images. Additional images may be submitted for $10 each. The same image may be submitted to more than one category.

IMAGE PREPARATION
Prepare your images as required before beginning the submission process. Submissions are only accepted via the online process. Submissions as email attachments, on CD, or prints are not allowed in this competition and will not be returned. Digital image files must meet the following specifications: 8 bit JPEG files (CMYK and 16 bits files will not be uploaded), the largest dimension should be 1280 pixels (width or height), resolution of 72 ppi, JPG compression quality of 7 or 8. Images will be viewed by the jurors as RGB images; therefore Adobe RGB or SRGB profiles should be used.
File names may contain a maximum of 25 characters, not counting .jpg. The file name may not include characters such as #, $, &, periods or other similar characters as part of the file, and should start with your name, then your first initial, and then the name of the file. There will be only one period in the file name, just prior to the file extension (i.e. Smith_J_filename.jpg). It's important to follow these instructions about the file name to allow the right storage into the image database.
Image title may not exceed 40 characters. Please note that image title is the name of the artwork, not the file name.
ACCEPTANCE NOTIFICATION
Everyone whose image is chosen for the exhibitions will receive an email notification of the accepted image(s).

EXHIBIT PRINTS
All accepted images submitted for exhibition must be printed and framed professionally. PWP recognizes that some work is non traditional and incorporates the framing as an integral part of the presentation. To encourage participation by photographers from around the world, PWP offers optional discounted printing, matting and framing services. Specific information on these exhibition services will be sent to the selected photographers with their notification of acceptance.
SALES
All work accepted for the gallery show must be for sale. PWP will receive a 20% commission on the sale of any work.
USE RIGHTS
By submission for jurying, artists whose submissions are chosen for the exhibition grant PWP the right to use their images for the purpose of marketing the exhibition and other PWP programs. Artists grant the use of their image(s) as stated without further contact or compensation from PWP. Artist’s recognition is provided with any use.

The gallery will be participating in the FotoWeek DC 2010 Festival by hosting our biennial small works show, this year with an emphasis on photo based mediums. All artwork must not exceed 5 inches in any direction, inclusive of frame.
Our juror is Kathleen Ewing, owner of Kathleen Ewing Gallery, which specializes in photography. She represents over 40 contemporary photographers and maintains an inventory of 19th and 20th century vintage photographs. She was the Executive Director of The Association of International Photography Art Dealers, from 1991 to 2007 and is also the Executive Director of the Art Dealers Association of Greater Washington.
